Art is a source that brings ideas and feelings to reality. For
example, if Robert’s participants did not feel comfortable with Robert or with
his study, art could be used to show what they are thinking. I feel that art
can be used to express how ones feeling about an ethical concern but can it
truly be used to address any ethical issues? Art can definitely be used to
express ones thoughts about an ethical issue but I do not believe that art can
be used to address an ethical issue.

I believe that ethical dilemmas will differ from study to
study. However, after reading Joan and Robert’s research study, it appears that
they both were concerned with the sensationalizing with their participants. Both
Joan and Robert created a tranquil and positive environment for their participants
which made them feel safe. As the participants obtained the feeling of security,
they were able to trust both of the researchers. After reading both cases, it
appeared that each researcher wanted the best for their participants in did not
want to harm them in anyway, which refers back to upholding their ethical duty.
RR 13
According to page 128, the section entitled Codes of Ethics
for fieldwork was achieved and upheld by Robert. During Roberts study, he
ensured that each participant’s identity will be kept anonymous. He was
upholding his ethical duty of maintaining anonymity, as well as protecting his
participants from any harm. “Because of his thoughtful and detailed
explanation, the men felt secure and protected and, so, consented to participate
in the study (Madison, p.67).” Robert’s honesty about his study allowed him to obtain
a good rapport with his participants which proceeded to them giving Robert consent
to use them in his study. In Robert’s case, it was apparent that he was putting
his participants first because by being honest with them, he was giving them
the choice to participate in the study or not. Robert was upholding the AAA’s
code of ethics.

Reading Response #11
During my research, I will be creating a project
that focuses on 8 sessions and during those sessions, we will introduce what
bullying is, how to acknowledge it and methods to prevent it. During this process,
I will use the concept of visual images because I believe that students can
hear about bullying but what really causes them to internalize the information
is for them to see it. I agree with Sandra Weber when she states, that visuals
can be used to put hard to grasp concepts into words. I think that people
understand what bullying is but they do not truly grasp the entire concept. During
this project, students will be able to correlate what they have previously
learned about the types of bullying and what constitutes bullying and relate
those words to visuals. They will use visuals to put this concept into words. I
believe that visuals are a great source to use and I will utilize this concept
during my research.

Reading Response #10
Fiction art-based research is vital in helping
students express themselves as well as having me collect data regarding what
students interpretation of bullying is. Although this is a serious social
issue, art can be utilized to bring easy to students about the severity of the
issue as well as using art for students to express themselves. After viewing
examples of fiction based art, I found many interesting and useful forms of art
that I will utilize throughout my research. I think abstract art is a great
tool to use during my research because students can tell a story through both
their art and their narrative. I will ask students to create an abstract piece
of art and as they are creating this piece of art, students will use narrative
to tell the story of their picture. The colors they use will describe what they
are feeling, at that time about the topic discussed. I feel that colors can
tell a story within themselves, for example, various dark colors can be used to
describe frustration, sorrow, etc. while bright colors describe happiness,
love, etc. Students can use any combination of colors to describe their
feelings about the topic bullying. As students tell their stories through
colors, they can narrate their image but writing phrases, words, or sentences
to tell a story about bullying. This activity is open for interpretation, so
students have the freedom to create a story using colors and words.
